Arta Majorca
Arta is a picturesque, hilltop town situated on the north-east of the island. The name Arta comes from the Arabic word jertan which means garden. It's main attraction is the Santuari de Sant Salvador d'Arta which sits on the hilltop over looking the town. Those willing to trek up to the Santuari will be rewarded with great views of the town and surrounding area. Also impressive is the San Salvador Church dating back to the 13th century.
Arta has some great hotels and restaurants to enjoy, perhaps the best in the region. The main "high street" in Arta is pedestrianised and is lined with bars, restaurants and shops. Market day in Arta is on Tuesday.
Arta's Ancient History
The area appears to have been occupied for over 3000 years. In fact there is a bronze age site, Ses Paisses, just outside the town which includes remains of a defense wall and watchtower. The Museu Regional d'Arta contains various objects such as ceramics and jewellery found at the site and elsewhere on the island.
